The Department of Public Health & Homeland Security offers a Master of Science in Occupational Health (MSOH) degree and Certificate in Occupational Health (COH) program in Industrial Hygiene (IH). In addition, a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is offered as part of the Northwest Ohio Consortium for Public Health, with majors in Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety Sciences, Health Promotion and Education, Public Health Administration, Public Health Epidemiology, and Public Health Nutrition. The department consists of 4 full-time faculty, and 15 part-time supporting faculty.
The MSOH - IH program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology - Applied Science Accreditation Commission. (ABET ASAC), ABET Inc., Baltimore, MD, 21202. In addition, the program is recognized as a CDC/NIOSH Training Program and has received a grant as part of the Healthy People 2010 initiative. Since 1988, 120 students have graduated from the MSOH degree - IH program and four have graduated from the COH - IH program.
The MPH degree is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). The first class was admitted for Fall 1997 and since that time, 149 students have graduated from the program.

The mission of the Department of Public Health & Homeland Security in the College of Medicine at the University of Toledo is to provide education, conduct research, and render service to improve and maintain the quality of life of the public by emphasizing prevention and remediation of illness and injury and promotion of healthy and safe environmental and occupational settings.
Vision for the Department of Public Health and Homeland Security
The Department of Public Health & Homeland Security will continue to serve society by focusing on the environmental and occupational health sciences and technologies, including environmental health, occupational health (industrial hygiene), epidemiology, disaster (natural and terrorism)preparedness, recognition and response, and health promotion and education. In relation, the Department will continue to address approaches and efforts to minimize human exposures to unacceptable levels of physical, chemical and biological agents, and, mitigate related factors that contribute to human illnesses and injuries via administrative, engineering, and/or personal protective control measures. This will be achieved by conducting applicable teaching, research and service activities, and, delivering the high quality MS and MPH programs accredited by the prestigious Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ABET ASAC), and Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH), respectively. The Department aspires to: expand student recruitment in relation to current degree and certificate programs; increase number of dual degree MD-MPH students (comports with an Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Sciences 2003 recommendation); increase offerings of technologically enhanced academic and continuing education programs; maintain current funding and designation as a CDC/NIOSH Training Program; increase consistency in securing and maintaining external grants and contracts; maintain existing and increase new relationship with regional health departments, businesses and organizations; strengthen and/or expand its collaborative efforts with Bowling Green State University via the Northwest Ohio Consortium for Public Health; establish and strengthen collaboration with other regional and State colleges and universities, including Owens Community College via the Great Lakes Center for Homeland Security; increase integration of effort and joint projects with other UT Colleges and Departments.
