Bibliographic Management Software: EndNote

Bibliographic management software programs like EndNote are databases designed specifically for bibliographic citations. Not only do they keep track of bibliographic elements of a citation, they can also be used as a searchable index for reprint files and can automatically format and reformat references in manuscripts.

There are three main bibliographic management packages: EndNote, ProCite, and Reference Manager. They all offer the same basic functions:

  • enter citations manually or by importing citations from databases
  • search the citations in the database
  • insert citations into a manuscript using popular word processing programs
  • format and reformat citations in a manuscript

EndNote is the program currently supported on the University of Toledo Health Science Campus. To have EndNote 9 (Win2000/XP/ME) installed on your office or lab computer, contact the Information Systems help desk at (419) 383-4259.

EndNote 9 is available for installation on home computers for current University of Toledo Health Science Campus faculty, current staff members, and currently enrolled students. For more information, see the Information Systems web site. For more information on EndNote, see one of the help sheets listed below.

*NEW UPDATE*  Using EndNote for APA Format [PDF]
Contact Mulford Reference Assistance to obtain the updated APA filter for EndNote 9.

Using the EndNote Import option when importing references from OhioLINK databases can be messy. The Library has created import filters for commonly used online resources for cleaner imports:

OhioLINK MEDLINE
CINAHL
PsycINFO
Biological Abstracts
EBSCOhost

To obtain these filters, please contact Mulford Reference Assistance. The requested filters will be sent as email attachments. Save these attachments in the Filters subdirectory in the EndNote directory. When importing records, select the appropriate filter.

The Mulford Library also has an updated list of MEDLINE journal abbreviations that can be imported into your library.  To request a copy of this file, contact Mulford Reference Assistance.
