Borrowing Books from the Mulford Library
Patrons affiliated with the University of Toledo or any OhioLINK institution may borrow materials with a valid campus ID free of charge. Patrons not affiliated with the University should call 419.383.4225 for pricing information. Those who are not affiliated with UT or OhioLINK, but who wish to borrow materials may purchase a library card at the service desk. Please phone 419.383.4225 for more information. Items to be borrowed must be presented at the service desk along with a valid campus ID or library card.
Loan Periods and Renewals for Items from the Mulford Library
Most items in the Mulford Library may be borrowed for 21 days, including books in the circulating collection, special collections, the Classics of Medicine series, and electronic reserves (such as CDs that come with books). Audiovisuals may be checked out for 3 days, and reserve materials may be checked out for 2 hours. (Some items, such as those in the Reference Collection and in the rare books collection, do not circulate.)Materials may be renewed four times providing that someone else hasn't requested the item (placed a hold on the item). The renewal period is the same as the original loan period. Materials can be renewed in person, by phone (419.383.4225), or online.
Overdue fines are $.50 per day for all items except reserve materials which accrue at $1.00 per hour. If you have a question about an overdue fine, call 419.383.4225.
Obtaining books not available at Mulford
To borrow items from from St. Vincent's library:Items in the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center library are included in our catalog. To borrow from the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, a book request form must be submitted to the Library. Request forms are available at the Central Service desk. Health Science Campus students, staff, residents, and faculty who are registered with the Mulford Library are welcome to visit the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center library and check out materials (21-day check-out period).
Borrowing from an OhioLINK library.If the item needed is not available at either Mulford Library or the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, the next step is to check the OhioLINK central catalog. Mulford Library patrons may borrow items directly from OhioLINK libraries. Upon locating the item to be borrowed, a visible link to request the item will be displayed. Currently only books and certain audiovisual materials may be borrowed. For help borrowing books through OhioLINK, call Reference Assistance at 419.383.4218. The Interlibrary Services Department does not accept requests for items available through OhioLINK. (21-day check-out period for books; 7-day check-out)
Borrowing items not available through OhioLINK.Books that are not available at St. V's or through OhioLINK may be obtained through the Interlibrary Services Department. Requests may be submitted electronically or on a paper book request form (available at the Library at the service desk). Items borrowed through Interlibrary Services are usually from outside the state and may take as long as two weeks to arrive. The amonut of time that an item from another library may be checked out varies, based on the lending library. Whether an item may be renewed and the length of time of the renewal depend upon the lending library.
Copies of articles available at Mulford
Patrons may photocopy any material that is located in the Mulford Library. Photocopiers are located on the fifth floor of the library in room 502. Copies are five cents per page with a copy card; ten cents per page using change. Copy cards can be purchased in the computer lab on the fourth floor of the library. Departmental copy codes can also be used with the copiers on the fifth floor.
The library also offers a photocopy service that is available to faculty and staff at a rate of 25 cents per page.
Obtaining articles not available at Mulford
Photocopies of journal articles not owned by the Mulford Library may be obtained through the Interlibrary Services department. University of Toledo students, staff, residents, and faculty are permitted 60 free article requests from other libraries per academic year. All articles requested in excess of 60 will incur a charge of $5.50 per article. Articles can be obtained for patrons who are not affiliated with the University of Toledo for a fee, which is reduced for people with Mulford library cards. Call 419.383.3973 for information about fees; call 419.383.4225 for information about obtaining a library card. Forms for requesting articles are available at the service desk and online.
Once received by the Mulford Library, nearly all articles from other libraries will be email to the requestor. If your article cannot be emailed, you will be notified that it is available for you to pick up. Materials not owned by Mulford will take longer but still average only three days. The turn-around time for requests for photocopies of material owned by the library is within 48 hours. Fax service is available for emergency situations.
