: Program Description - Introduction & Setting

INTRODUCTION
This program description provides the potential student and the matriculated student with information about the Occupational Therapy Doctoral degree program. It should be viewed as an adjunct to the Handbook of the Graduate Student from the College of Graduate Studies, and the College of Health Science and Human Service (CHSHC) Student Handbook, all of which contain specific information regarding pertinent policies. The information herein is subject to periodic change. It is the applicant's responsibility to obtain and meet the most current admissions criteria. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of all degree requirements and to work closely with an advisor to ensure that all requirements are fulfilled.

THE SETTING
On July 1, 2006, the University of Toledo (UT) and the Medical University of Ohio merged to form one comprehensive University composed of the Main Campus on Bancroft Street and the Health Science Campus on Arlington Avenue. The University of Toledo Health Science Campus (UTHSC) is located in a beautifully wooded, residential area of southwest Toledo. Since its founding as the Medical College of Ohio in 1964, the 350 acre Health Science Campus has grown to include the University Medical Center, the Kobacker Center (Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital), the UT-Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital, the Morse Physical Health and Research Center, the Block Health Science Building, the Health Education Building, the Ruppert Center, the Howard L. Collier Building which houses the occupational therapy program and most recently, the Center for Creative Education. Enclosed walkways and tunnels connect all campus buildings allowing easy movement without concern for the weather.

The Collier Building is an 87,550 square foot facility containing state-of-the art classrooms, research laboratories, and offices. The occupational therapy classrooms and laboratories have been custom designed to offer students hands-on learning opportunities and access to high-tech research equipment.

 UTHSC is home to selected, health-related program from four Colleges: the College of Health Science and Human Service (CHSHC) the College of Nursing, the College of Medicine, and the College of Graduate Studies. The Health Science Campus programs from the College of Health and Human Service include those from the Department of Occupational Therapy, the Department of Physical Therapy, the Department of Public Health, and the Department of Physician Assistant Studies. The Occupational Therapy Doctoral degree is offered by the Department of Occupational Therapy in collaboration with the College of Graduate Studies. Currently, there are 150 OT programs in the U.S. The UT OTD program is ranked 15th by US News and World Report for graduate level occupational therapy programs.
