Residency Information
Program Description

The basic core of the residency is a five-year program which will prepare the trainee for board eligibility in general surgery. Residents receive extensive experience in general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, peripheral vascular surgery, trauma, surgical critical care, and surgical oncology.

The program is centered at three hospitals: the University of Toledo Medical Center, St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital.  There are a number of strengths which occur as a result of the close co-operative relationship between these outstanding academic and community-based medical centers. For example, the faculty in surgery and the general surgical residents have full responsibilities for the care of critically ill patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit along with Intermediate Care Units. Residents learn the complete aspect of caring for such patients both before and subsequent to major operations.

The trauma services at both hospitals are similarly comprehensive with both services being certified as Level I by the American College of Surgeons. The patients are composed of a higher proportion of blunt vehicular trauma with a smaller portion of penetrating injuries.
The program offers complete training in minimally invasive surgery including advanced procedures such as Nissen fundoplication, bowel resection, adrenalectomy, distal pancreatectomy, partial gastrectomy and others. The training in surgical oncology is outstanding with faculty experts in hepatobiliary surgery, recurrent colorectal cancer, sarcoma, melanoma, and breast cancer. The University of Toledo is one of the few centers in the country with an intraoperative radiation therapy program as well as having programs in isolated chemotherapy for limb and organ perfusion. Departmental research is available in the molecular biology of cancer and tumor-cell drug resistance. Several collaborative research projects are available with the Basic Science Departments.  The cooperative training program between the University of Toledo and St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center provides an excellent experience in vascular surgery with attendings trained in advanced vascular procedures including endovascular surgery.

All general surgical residents receive basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, and advanced trauma life support training courses prior to the start of their residency.
