Research

The department has four full-time PhDs and two full-time MD/PhDs who are funded by federal, industrial, and local sources. These investigators, in conjunction with clinical scientists, work on the molecular biology and chromosomal changes associated with carcinogenesis and tumor progression. The department is a world leader in the microscopic image analysis of tumor DNA cell content and chromosome makeup and has a unique integrated microscopy center which allows for the performance of virtually all known microscopic techniques on the same cancer cells.

Basic investigations in the four departmental laboratories include:

A world leader in the microscopic image analysis of tumor DNA cell content and chromosome makeup...

  • fluorescence in situ hybridization study of chromosomal segregation in normal and cancerous cells
  • molecular basis of in vitro tumor cell invasion
  • the role of the MDR gene in chemotherapy resistance
  • anti-tumor effects of TNF
  • genetic basis of neointimal hyperplasia, and
  • the molecular basis of transformation

The clinical investigations include studies of a possible relationship between hypocoagulable states and arteriovenous graft thrombosis, the influence of aneuploidy on the survival of pancreatic carcinoma patients, the characteristics of Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes, new surgical applications of ultrasonography, and isolated perfusion for the treatment of sarcoma.

Close research cooperation with University of Toledo cell biologists, pathologists, and molecular biologists is available for those residents interested in basic research training in preparation for academic careers.
