This Summer Educational Opportunities catalog describes a variety of research, clinical, community health, and health policy programs in which students can participate in the summer following their first year of medical school. Each page has a description of the program and information on dates, duration, stipend, eligibility, and application requirements for the program. These experiences are only available to UT medical students. The number of students selected for each program is dependent on funding and the availability of preceptors. We anticipate that up to 20 students per program can be accommodated. Depending on availability and funding, it may be possible for students to do more than one of the preceptorships. You are not allowed to be enrolled in more than one at any given time, however, and the total length of all of the preceptorships you select may not exceed 14 weeks. Federal Work-Study supports most of the stipends for these preceptorships, so we ask all applicants to complete a new FAFSA if they are interested in these programs. Completing the FAFSA is not required, but preference is given to students who are work-study eligible.
UT Medical Student Policy places the following restrictions on students' participation in UT College of Medicine-sponsored summer preceptorships:
Students who, following year one evaluation, are in good academic standing may participate in compensated preceptorships. Students who have INCOMPLETE and/or FAIL or WITHDRAW FAIL status in one block, may be given permission to participate in compensated preceptorships if the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, Years 1 & 2, block directors, and summer faculty preceptors all agree that the summer experience is compatible with what is required to complete the course or remediate the academic deficiency. Students who have INCOMPLETE and/or FAIL or WITHDRAW FAIL in two or more blocks will not be permitted to participate in the MUO preceptorships, unless they are not involved in any summer remediation/examinations.The Office of Student Affairs has files on most of the opportunities with additional information and, if available, an application that you may review and copy.
