SMM - Students for Medical Missions
Students for Medical Missions (SMM) is open to all students at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus. The goal of our organization is to provide information and possible financial assistance in order to promote participation in medical missions. The experience gained on a medical mission is truly life changing and helps to develop culturally competent health care professionals as well as promoting a lifelong desire to serve.
Our group was formed in September of 1998 and since that time members have taken part in medical missions all over the world. Several common missions include the Honduras mission during spring break and a summer Guatemala mission in addition to others. SMM has participated in missions to help respond to several natural disasters such as Hurricane Mitch in Honduras soon after our founding, and more recently the tsunami in Indonesia. In addition we hold an annual Students for Medical Missions Symposium where some of the latest information on medical missions is available from several organizations.
Dorothy Price Award
Ms. Dorothy Price, in her wish to support student involvement in medical missions around the world, has generously provided Students for Medical Missions (SMM) with funds to be used to alleviate the financial burden of such endeavors. Any University of Toledo Health Science Campus student after compliance with the UTHSC International Travel Policy may apply for and receive a maximum $500 reimbursement for expenses incurred for each medical mission in which they participate. Copies of the UTHSC International Travel Policy and of the application for the Dorothy Price Scholarship are available at the Office of Student Life.
