UT's Medical Students for Choice organization is a local chapter of the national MSFC. MSFC was established in 1993 by students concerned about the abortion provider shortage, the lack of abortion and women's reproductive health education in medical schools and residency programs, and escalating violence against providers. They were motivated by the conviction that without trained, willing, and caring providers, women will not be truly free to make the full range of reproductive choices they may be faced with in life. Today, MSFC represents over 10,000 students and residents and has groups at more than 120 medical schools across the United States and Canada.
MSFC is dedicated to ensuring that women receive the full range of reproductive health care choices. Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures performed in the United States, yet most medical students are graduating with little more than circumstantial knowledge about abortion. As students, we work to make reproductive health care a part of standard medical education and residency training. Half of all pregnancies occurring each year in the US are unintended, and physicians who do not know enough to explain all medical options to their patients with an unplanned pregnancy, or choose not to explain all options, are making the decision for them. We work to ensure that physicians are prepared to meet the full reproductive needs of their women patients.
