The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association received official recognition in the spring of 1995. The organization has six distinct purposes:
- To promote heath issues specific to Asians and Asian-Americans
- To promote cultural awareness among fellow students, colleagues, professors, and others in the UT community
- To be active in the Toledo community by linking with physicians in the area, conducting health screening and promoting heath issues
- To facilitate linking with other medical school groups both locally and nationally
- To be a resource for students interested in educational opportunities overseas
- To provides a forum for social interaction among students in the above goals
Upcoming Events
- Saturday, April 26, 2008: APAMSA Regional Conference "Model Minority, Model Health?"at Case Western Reserve University. The conference will offer a variety of topics exploring healthcare and the role of Asian Pacific Americans in medicine. All travel costs covered. - Saturday, May 17, 2008: Asian American Health/Hep B Fair in Lansing, MI sponsored by Michigan State APAMSA. E-mail John.Pham@utoledo.edu by May 14 if interested in helping.
- October 17-19, 2008: APAMSA National Conference "Building ONE Community: Cultural Awareness, Competency, and Leadership" in Philadelphia, PA. It will address the imperative that as American society becomes more culturally diverse, physicians are mandated not only to be more aware and sensitive of culturally relevant health issues, but also to be active in breaking down cultural barriers to health care access for their patients.
