American Medical Women’s Association

The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) is an organization of women physicians, medical students, and others dedicated to serving as the unique voice for women’s health and the advancement of women in medicine.  Providing and developing leadership, advocacy, education, expertise, mentoring, and strategic alliances accomplish these goals.

October 2008 ~ Women’s medical and reproductive rights
A guest speaker will talk to us about the history/current state of women’s medical and reproductive rights and how laws may be affected depending on who gets elected in November and whom the President appoints as Justices.

November 2008 ~ Panel: Women in Male Dominant Specialties
A panel of female physicians practicing in medical specialties predominately composed of men (surgery, orthopedics, urology) will discuss their experiences in their respective field and any challenges they faced along their career paths.

December 2008 ~ HPV and the Vaccine
Dr. Anne Ruch Ob/gyn will provide us with a lunch seminar concerning HPV and its vaccine Gardasil.

January 2009 ~ Life in Balance
A panel of physicians discussing their careers, families, and how they have successfully combined the two.  They will also share their opinions on when it is best to begin a family.

February 2009 ~ Heart Health Week
Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women in all 50 states.  Join us as we here physicians talk about this deadly disease and hear what Toledo officials have to say about our city’s status as the 5th worst medium metropolis for heart health.  Wear red, buy a raffle ticket, and win prizes all week!

March 2009 ~ Girls Night Out
Join fellow female physicians, residents, and medical students for food, conversation, and networking.  A cover charge will cover appetizers and drink specials.

April 2009 ~ Domestic Violence Awareness Week
Around the world, 1:3 women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime.  Women are five to eight times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner.  The statistics are staggering.  Join us in this week of education about the facts of domestic violence and learn how to recognize its signs and how to protect yourself – Self-Dense lessons!

Every 8 Weeks – Health Screening at the YWCA
Help women change their lives with a simple test – assist in taking blood pressures, cholesterol screenings, and glucose monitoring.  Check the bulletin board for sign-ups.
