American Medical Student Association (AMSA)

The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), with a half-century history of medical student activism, is the oldest and largest independent association of physicians-in-training in the United States. Today, AMSA is a student-governed, national organization committed to representing the concerns of physicians-in-training. With a membership of nearly 50,000 medical students, premedical students, interns, residents and practicing physicians from across the country, AMSA continues its commitment to improving medical training and the nation's health.

How is AMSA different from other organizations? When you join AMSA, you become part of a vital force of future physicians who believe that patients and health professionals are partners in the management of health care and that access to high-quality health care is a right and not a privilege. At AMSA, activism is a way of life. Student idealism is transformed into meaningful public service, innovation and institutional change.

Our 4 strategic priorities:

  • Fighting for Universal Healthcare
  • Eliminating Health Disparities
  • Advocating for Diversity in Medicine
  • Transforming the Culture of Medical Education

On a local level, the UT COM chapter of AMSA sponsors many exciting events, including a “Meet and Greet” social gathering early in the school year, which provides incoming students a chance to meet upper classmen and faculty.  AMSA also holds an instrument sale and a residency fair each fall, coordinates National Primary Care Week, and plans an annual Halloween party for local children with diabetes.  Each winter, AMSA co-sponsors the Medicine Ball which is a semi-formal dinner, dance and auction to benefit the Community Care Clinic.
