Minimally Invasive Surgery
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is committed to using the latest minimally invasive techniques to treat a variety of gynecologic problems. Physicians trained in advanced operative laparoscopy offer procedures including laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic myomectomy, and laparoscopic staging and treatment of cancer. Outpatient procedures such as endometrial ablation as well as diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy are offered at the University Medical Center's George Isaac Minimally Invasive Surgery Center.
Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstruction
Dr. Terrence Horrigan supervises the specialty area of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstruction. A majority of patients referred for consultation from physicians in the area have problems with either incontinence or pelvic prolapse. For those patients who cannot achieve optimum results with behavior modification or pelvic support appliances, we offer a full range of reconstructive and urogynecologic surgery. Cystometrograph analysis, anatomic defect evaluation, cystoscopy, multi-channel testing and leak-point analysis are treatment options available in our department.
Gynecologic Care
Comprehensive general gynecologic care is provided by our department, including annual exam and contraceptive services as well as treatment of gynecologic disorders such as abnormal bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis, vulvar disorders, menopausal symptoms and cervical disoders. Our office recently purchased new equipment to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical dysplasia.
Obstetrical Care
A full complement of prenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care is offered by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Currently deliveries are performed at The Toledo Hospital and St. Vincent's Mercy Medical Center. There is a dedicated ultrasonography technician employed by the practice and in-office ultrasounds are performed at our facility.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division features a team of fellowship trained physicians providing the high-risk mother and baby specialized care to improve chances of a healthy outcome. Services provided include pre-conception counseling for women with diabetes, asthma, heart problems or other conditions that may increase risk. The department offers prenatal diagnoses for fetal chromosomal abnormalities, cardiac and stress test evaluations and high-resolution ultrasound. Our physicians are there to assist the family physician or Ob/Gyn physician - not replace them. Our high-risk specialists can help improve the likelihood for a positive outcome for both mother and baby.
Research
A team of researchers headed by Rajesh Naz, Ph.D., Professor of Obstetrics Gynecology and Director of the division of Research, continue to study the development of a contraceptive vaccine, that could be used by both men and women. It is our hope that safe, effective and acceptable contraceptive vaccines may be an attractive addition to the currently available range of family planning methods. They would confer long-term, but not permanent protection. Such vaccines could be inexpensive to manufacture and be free of metabolic and endocrine disturbances. Dr. Naz notes that a contraceptive vaccine would help promote more stable population growth. This very important research along with additional faculty and residents projects, are part of the dynamic activities occurring in the research area of our department..
Osteoporosis Program
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers the region's most comprehensive approach to osteoporosis research, prevention, evaluation and treatment. The evaluation identifies a woman's risk for osteoporosis by considering her age, weight and history of hormone intake. Should her history indicate the need, the patient is additionally screened with a DEXA scan of the spine and hip. This medical history and physical examination are combined into a computerized report that is sent to both the patient and her primary care physician. In addition to osteoporosis evaluation, an entire regimen for care and rehabilitation is available.
