Welcome! to Yoshiro Miyahara, Ph.D.  Dr. Miyahara recently joined the lab of Dr. Stanislaw Stepkowski.  Yoshiro comes to us from The Second Department of Internal Medicine, Mie University, School of Medicine, Japan.

Welcome! to Leslie Karpas, M.D.  Dr. Karpas joined the lab of Dr. Stanislaw Stepkowski and is working with T-cells and transplantation.  Dr. Karpas is bilingual (English and Spanish) and comes to us from Ross University School of Medicine.    

Congratulations! John Presloid, Master of Science, IIT track, Biomedical Sciences.  John successfully defended his thesis, "Characterization of vesicular stomatitis virus strains with adaptability differences," on Friday, July 18, 2008.  (mentor: Dr. Isabel Novella).

Pablo Serrano, Master of Science, IIT track, Biomedical Sciences.  Pablo successfully defended his thesis, "Mechanisms of induction of CCL20 in lung epithelial cells by Moraxella catarrhalis," on Wednesday, June 18, 2008. (mentor: Dr. Z. Kevin Pan).  In July, Pablo will be finishing his masters in public health and continuing his residency in General Surgery at the University of Toledo.  He is planning on writing a paper of his research and presenting it at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, October 2008. 

Congratulations!  Diane Ammons!   Diane, Assistant to Dr. Takashima, was nominated for and won UT's 2008 Outstanding Staff Award on June 12th, along with 9 other awardees...chosen out of 75 nominees.   The prizes for this award is a beautifully engraved glass plaque and check.  The awards ceremony took place at Nitschke Hall on main campus.  President Lloyd Jacobs gave the introduction to this important event! 
Congratulations! Brett Williams, M.D.   Dr. Williams received the department's Microbiology & Immunology award for Outstanding Academic Accomplishment in Block 6, 2007-08.  Dr. Bob Blumenthal presented the award at the ceremony on June 5. 

Congratulations! to Elizabeth Beil, a Masters student in Dr. Randall Worth's laboratory.  Elizabeth was accepted into the University of Toledo Medical School for this coming fall. 

 

Congratulations! to Ranendra Dutta, 2nd Place Winner! in the 2008 Graduate Research Forum (HSC).  Rana is a student in Dr. Novella's laboratory.  The title of his winning poster is: "Escape from clonal interference in an RNA virus."
Contratulations! to Benjamin Hart, 3rd Place Winner! in the 2008 Graduate Research Forum (HSC).  Randy is a student in Dr. Blumenthal's laboratory.  The title of his winning poster is: "Recognition of DNA by the Helix-Turn-Helix global regulatory protein Lrp is modulated by the amino terminus,"  B.R. Hart, P.K. Mishra, R.E. Lintner, and R.M. Blumenthal.
Welcome! to Fang Qiang Tang, Ph.D. - Dr. Tang earned his Ph.D. in 2007 from Wuhan University, Department of Microbiology, in Wuhan, China.  He is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Isabel Novella's lab. 
Congratulations! to Steven Gay, medical student, in the laboratory of Dr. Randall Worth.  Steven has been awarded a summer fellowship in Dr. Worth's lab, by The American College of Rheumatology.
Welcome! to Nobuyasu Mayuzumi, M.D., Ph.D.  Dr. Mayuzumi has joined Dr. Takashima's lab and comes to us from Juntendo University, Department of Dermatology, School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan.

to Masaaki Miyazawa, Ph.D.  Dr. Miyazawa has joined Dr. Takashima's lab as a Post-Doctoral Fellow and comes to us from the Kao Corporation, Tochigi, Japan.

Thank you!  Professor Lehmann, Ph.D. for your stewardship as course director of the Block 6 Immunity & Infection course.  We appreciate the time and effort you contributed to the teaching and education of  UT's second year medical students.   

Welcome!  Stanislaw M. Stepkowski, DVM, Ph.D., D.Sc.  Dr. Stepkowski, Professor, joined our department December 2007.  He was formerly in the Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation, Department of Surgery, The University of Texas Medical School, Houston, Texas.  

 



Welcome!  Wenhao Chen, Ph.D.  Dr. Chen, Assistant Professor, joined our department in early January. He comes to us from the Department of Surgery, The University of Texas Medical School, Houston, Texas.

Welcome! to Nancy H. Collins, Ph.D.   Dr. Collins joined our department in October to conduct research.  She comes to us from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.  In addition, she is an alumnus of The University of Toledo undergraduate and master's program.

Congratulations! to R. Mark Wooten, Ph.D, Associate Professor, Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology.  Mark was  selected as the recipient of the 2007 College of Graduate Studies Dean's Award for Mentoring.  Mark was honored at the UT HSC Faculty Recognition Dinner on Friday, October 12, 2007 at the Pinnacle.   
Congratulations! to Dorothea Sawicki, Ph.D, Professor, Medical Microbiology and Immunology.  Thea was selected by a committee of her peers to receive the 2007 University of Toledo College of Medicine Award for Sustained Research.  The award was  presented to her at the UT HSC Faculty Recognition Dinner on Friday, October 12, 2007 at The Pinnacle. 
Congratulations! Dr. Randall Worth, Assistant Professor in medical microbiology and immunology, is one of six UT College of Medicine interdisciplinary research teams to receive a $100,000 grant for translational research studies.  Dr. Worth, P.I., is studying an inquiry into platelet dysfunction in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with Drs. William Gunning; Bashar Kahaleh, and Da-Zhong Zhuang.   

Graduate Student Defenses in 2008:

Congratulations! to Sumanta Mukherjee, Ph.D., Doctoral Candidate, IIT track, Biomedical Sciences.  Sumanta successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, "LPS induced TH2 (Interleukin-4) cytokine production in macrophages and its regulation," on Friday, March 14, 2008. (mentor: Z. Kevin Pan, M.D., Ph.D).  Sumanta has accepted a Postdoctoral position in the Department of Pathology, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.
