Occupational Exposures
Students should always notify SHS in the event of an occupational exposure to blood or body fluids.

A student who experiences an exposure during evening or weekend hours, should contact the SHS physician for questions and follow-up care. Contact the operator at (419) 383-4000 and ask them to page the physician on-call for SHS (usually Dr. Douglas Federman, SHS medical director).

What students need to do in the event of blood or body fluid exposure:

1. Flush the area thoroughly; wash with soap, if possible.
2. Notify supervising faculty member and your preceptor.
3. COMPLETE, in DETAIL, an Incident Report AT THE SITE where the exposure occurred.
4. Seek IMMEDIATE Risk Exposure Evaluation AT THE SITE where the exposure occurred. The office to contact is usually Employee or Occupational Health or Infection Control.
5. Initial health care and evaluation must be received within 2 hours. A physician at the Emergency Department or Occupational Health area usually does this at the site. The patient also requires testing.
6. Notify Student Health Services if you have an exposure as soon as possible. Leave a message on voice mail with your phone or pager number. SHS will assist you with the follow-up care.
7. Any further questions can be addressed by the physician on-call at SHS, 24-hours a day. Call the operator, 383-4000.
